The Elephant and its Rope

We have heard this story many times in our lifespan. Some have heard it from Grandmother, motivational speaker or close relative. Many times it has been narrated, many times it has been told but the moral of the story is touched by millions heart. Let us understand my version of this story to gain the motivation once again.

A man was walking through the group of elephants in the circus, he suddenly paused, and a bit confused by seeing that these huge animals were being tied by only a weak rope tied to one of the legs. No iron chains and no cages at all. It was possible for such a big elephant could break them anytime but they did not. Why? He knows that there might be some reason for this calm behaviour of elephants. He also knows the barbaric behaviour of the elephant as he seen these elephants demolishing trees with just a push in his village.

He saw a trainer nearby who was feeding these elephants and inquired about why these animals just stood at the same place and trying no attempt to run away.

The trainer said, “Well when they were very immature and much smaller in size and power we use the similar size rope to knot them. For them, at that age, the rope had enough strength to hold them tight at knotting place. At a young age, they tried very hard to break the rope and get away. They tried very hard and made perception that they could not get away from this knot ever. As they grow up, the size of the rope increase and strength. The perception to believe they could not run away. They by themselves believe that the rope could still make them stay and hold, so they never try to break it and roam free.”

The man was amazed listening to the trainer. These giant animals could break free from their bonds any time they want but because their perception is not allowing them to do so, they remained right in the spot where they were in the past. The man heard the story and walk away with the best lesson of life. He knows now that the perception and belief in himself is a great thing in life to become successful. Never get exhausted in making attempts regularly. If you fail to get up and try again. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam (The 11th President of India) says “fail” actually means the first attempt in learning.

He realised just like the elephants – the giant creatures, many from our generation go through this life struck situation due to a perception or a belief that we cannot afford to do this, simply because we failed before many times trying?

Following the quote of famous scientist Dr. Kalam, Failure is just part of learning; we should never give up the trying in life it does not how many times we fail while completing. So just keep trying whatever you want to achieve in life. One day you will get it.
