10 reasons people will Unfollow you on Twitter!

1. Selling on Your Profile – One of the biggest turnoffs is people who describe themselves as ‘guru’ or ‘expert’. (You’re probably not a Social Media Marketing Expert) Maybe you are, but please have some humility! I’ve also come to despise overly corporate or salesy custom backgrounds. By all means customise your background (in fact, I recommend it), but please don’t try to sell to me before I’ve even made contact.<br>

2. You’re a flood tweeter- A flood tweeter is someone who will rapidly tweet back to back so that all you see is a ‘flood’ of their avatar. People don’t like that!

3. You auto-DM- There is nothing I hater more than getting a million auto DMs every time I follow someone. Seriously!? If I wanted to talk to you I would send you an @reply. Stop doing it. Twitter needs to ban this.

4. You’re not interesting- Enough said.

5. You’re a spammer- Stop spamming twitter! We aren’t going to click a tweet that reads,”GET A FREE IPHONE CLICK HERE!!!!” Please report those users.

6. You’re a link dropper- If you’re all links and no talk, you’re not providing much value to your Twitter stream. And people aren’t going to stick around for very long.

7. No Interaction- Just like number 6, if all you do is post links or retweets people won’t follow. You need to communicate and interact with your followers. You could even make some new virtual friends. I know I did.

8. Automated Tweets- Let me be clear that I’m not talking about scheduling handwritten tweets using Hootsuite. I’m talking about an obviously automated stream from a news service or from a Facebook page. If I wanted an automated stream I’d sign up to your RSS feed or your Facebook page.

9. You tweet quotes all day- I’m glad you’re inspired by a quote, but it means nothing to me out of context. If you have to quote someone, add your own take as to why you’re quoting that person and how it impacts you or me today.

10. You don’t have a strategy- This is especially true if you are a brand, but even individuals can fall victim to having no reason for being on Twitter. Have a reason to exist on Twitter.
