The Viral Video

Lulu Mall was inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on July 10, 2022. It is run by Abu Dhabi-based Lulu Group of Indian-origin billionaire Yussuf Ali MA. In a video that went viral across social media platforms, eight Muslim men were seen offering namaz. The video was of July 12, 2022. The mall authorities complained and a case was registered against these men. The four men were arrested by the police.

 

Controversy Sparked

After the video went viral, some Hindu organizations complained about the violation of communal harmony and sought permission to recite the Hanuman Chalisa at the mall as a counter. The permission was denied. Three Hindu men were arrested as they sought to hold prayers on July 15, 2022. The mall owners were accused of being biased toward the Muslim community. The charge was denied by the management, which came up with data on the percentage of Hindu employees as 80%.

 

The Statement of UP CM Yogi Aadtiyanth

The chief minister of UP held a meeting with the officials and said, “There is a mall which has opened in Lucknow. It is working as a commercial establishment. Making it a political battleground, giving unnecessary statements, protesting on streets and hampering public movement is wrong. The Lucknow district administration should take it seriously as a malicious attempt is being made to create communal disharmony with anarchy. The administration should deal strictly with those trying to spoil the atmosphere by promoting unnecessary issues.”

 

The Lulu mall was a part of the UP Investors Summit 2018. It has been constructed at a whopping cost of Rs 2,000 crore.
