WHAT ARE UNF THREADS AND UNC THREADS? | DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UNF AND UNC THREAD GAGES

Treading gage is a crucial manufacturing tech for fasteners; there are many types of screw threads made by CNC machining. This article will introduce you to two typical thread gages with different pitch: UNF and UNC thread gages, the uses of both thread gages, and the difference between both thread gages.

What should you know about UNF Threads and UNC Threads Gages?

UNF and UNC are two symbols of the Unified Screw Thread Series, which defined based on the number of threads per inch and standardized with the gauge. UNF threads are Unified fine-pitch threads, while UNC threads are Unified grainy pitch threads. UNF and UNC thread screws are both used for fastening but used in different fields. Use the coarse thread for strength, and the fine-thread is cool for sealing.

Difference between UNF and UNC Thread

When it is used as fasteners, the preloads of UNF and UNC threads are bound. The impact of averting loosing of the fine thread is better than that of a granulated thread. When it is used for acclimation, the fine thread has more benefits. More difference between UNF thread and UNC thread are:

1) The UNF threads have a smaller helix angle and better firm, and it is more facilitative to the self-locking of the thread. So, it’s not that simple to loosen, unlike UNC threads. It is usually used for thin-walled parts and parts with higher anti-vibration conditions.

2) The UNF threads have more small pitch, there are more teeth squinched in the same thread length, it can minimize fluid leakage, so it is used in the places where sealing is necessary.

3) The UNC thread has fewer teeth of the same length, larger cross-section size of each tooth, and more ideal for bearing more significant tensile pressure and impact pressure.

4) Unlike fine screw thread, the grained screw thread has more strength and good substitution.

5) UNC threading also has a more fore bearing, better handles Production and plating than UNF thread gages

6) Because of the different characteristics, Unified coarse screw thread and fine screw thread have different functions.

Application of UNC (Unified coarse) thread

Coarse thread series (M/UNC/UNRC) is typically used for bulk manufacturing of threaded fasteners, such as bolts, screws, nuts, etc. It has unique benefits in some rough operation use that demands rapid assembly or disassembly and is simple to form attrition and vitiate.

Application of UNF (Unified Fine) thread

The UNF thread has a smaller pitch than the UNC thread with the same formal specification, higher thread power, smaller space occupation size, and better self-locking rendition. Fine thread series (MF/UNF/UNRF) is normally not used for bulky fatigue work; its universal uses are applications that need high fastener strength. It is basically used for positioning, adjustment, fixation, etc. Also, the fine thread can be used for fine adjustment. For instance, lens fixing of different optical instruments, micrometers, and other instruments used for measuring, threaded connectors, etc. But, the height of the fine thread is small, so it is easy to get cluttered when installing, and the burr has a great impact on the assembly, so it must be cleaned up. Also, the removal times of fine thread should be moderate.
