So Simple, Yet So Sumptuous-Dumplings

China has an ancient civilization and they have flourished their culture and economy worldwide. China being a developed country is able to share its cuisines with the whole world. One of their world famous cuisines is dumplings and it would be wrong on your part if you are under the impression that dumplings are served only in China. They are available in every continent and country. From savoury chicken dumplings to sugar coated modak’s, dumplings are so diverse and manifold that there exists no particular fixed style and pattern of cooking it. It is fried, baked, cooked, sweet savoury and many more. According to the definition given by oxford dictionary dumpling is simply a ball of dough cooked in a stew but is it all that describes the whole world of dumplings? Answer is certainly NO. Anything that fits into the dough of dumplings, forms a part of it.

As a famous Japanese proverb describes the beauty of dumplings by saying,”luck is like having a dumpling fly into your mouth”. It can be served as a main dish, a side dish or a desert. Dumpling is a dish which does not have any social pretence and it is supposed to have unfolded itself on its own as a one of the world’s most famous cuisine especially in China and parts of Europe. Though it is proven beyond doubts that dumplings have now made their place in almost the entire world with its recipes reaching a number as high as 30 plus. There are different categories of dumplings like Asian dumplings, Chinese dumplings, pork and meat dumplings, European dumplings. Different countries and regions have their own style of cooking and naming them differently. Like in Italy these are called ravioli or tortellini. Others are semolina and saffron dumplings, scallop and corn gyoza, salt fish and ackee dumplings, Tibetan pork momos and endless varieties exist.

The dough for dumplings is basically made of flour or any cereal which is the staple of that particular country. It is not at all difficult to prepare dough of dumplings. You just need to mix flour and water proportionately so that the dough is neither too stiff nor too soft.

The next step is preparing the filling for the dumplings. Filling comprises of vegetables say mushroom, cabbage, carrots or any vegetable of your choice or meat, fish, pork, chicken granules. This is the most flexible and dynamic recipe ever as whatever you wish to fill in it you can. It is as simple as that. Simple yet so sumptuous!

You need to make small round thin circles out of dough and gather the mixture of vegetable or meat along with finely chopped garlic, ginger and spring onions. Once the dough is made all you have to do is to fill the mixture into those thin circles and fold them. Now it is up to you if you wish to bake or fry or cook your favourite dumplings. You can even buy special dumplings flour which is available in the market like Asian dumpling flour and Chinese dumpling floor. Pelmeni with turkey are savoury stuffed pouches that originated in Siberia and been a staple food of Eastern Europe since ages.
