What Should I Do When My CPCS Card Expires

CPCS scheme provides two types of CPCS cards: A red card and a blue card. The red trained operator card has a validity of 2 years which cannot be renewed. The only alternative you have to survive in the scheme is to complete the relevant NVQ and upgrade to the blue competent operator card.

But if in case your red is expired, then still there are ways to come back in the scheme. Follow the following points:

  • If the CPCS card has expired but it is still within the 12 months of the expiry date.

A grace period of 12 months is provided for the Red CPCS cardholders. It indicates that card can be upgraded up to a year from the original expiry date provided in your first CPCS card. Now you have to register for the relevant NVQ. After the completion of this, you will be sanctioned to apply to CPCS for an extension of 12 months to your card.

  • If the CPCS card has expired over 12 months from its original expiry date but you are having a lot of current experience in the role.

After the 12 months of expiry of the card, the only possible way to re-enter the CPCs scheme is by following the given guidelines:

  1. Completing the Skills, Health, Safety and Environment test.
  2. Qualifying the CPCS technical theory test and practical tests in the appropriate category.
  3. Getting the construction NVQ in-admissible category.

If you are having experience in your discipline and are actively working in your role, then you select the Straight to blue route option. This is the most effective means of re-entering the CPCS scheme.

  • If the CPCs card has expired over the 12 months and you have no active role for a while and is not having a current experience.

If your card is expired over the 12 months and you are not having the experience in your current role, then the way to re-enter the CPCS scheme is by completing the following:

  1. Achieving the Skills, Health, Safety and Environment test.
  2. Qualifying the CPCS technical theory test and practical tests in the appropriate category.
  3. Register yourself for the construction NVQ in the relevant category.

If you have no experience in your role, then the best option would be to start all over from scratch. Full training and testing are required for your comeback with speed as per the legislation and best practices. Various CPCS courses are available to choose from.
